The Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at South Shore Hospital offers the region’s most comprehensive programs and services. Our Outpatient Rehabilitation Center provides exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, aquatic therapy, and speech therapy to patients of all ages. Patients may require a single service or multiple services.
Our expert team is dedicated to promoting recovery and preventing re-injury so patients can achieve their goals and return to full recovery. We strongly believe in a therapist/patient team approach so that together we may achieve realistic goals and facilitate each patient’s return to the highest level of activity.
The Conditions We Treat
Among the conditions the center can help you address are:
Acute and chronic injuries, including orthopedic and hand injuries resulting from auto, athletic, home, and worksite accidents. - Chronic or frequently occurring conditions, such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and ongoing pain.
- Complex disabling and catastrophic diseases and conditions, such as stroke, cancer, head injury, and spinal cord injury.
- Progressive diseases and disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and post-polio syndrome.
- Communication disorders, resulting from stroke, aphasia, congenital disorders, head injury, neurological conditions, developmental delays, hearing loss, and structural or muscular difficulties.
Outpatient Specialty Rehabilitation Programs
Seating/Wheelchair Clinic
We provide expert evaluation and prescription of wheelchairs seating systems and adaptive equipment.
Lumbar Stabilization
Focus is on helping patients gain strength, flexibility, and knowledge to allow for a safe return to activity.
Hand Therapy
A certified hand therapist oversees the evaluation and treatment of patients with upper arm and hand injuries.
Vestibular Rehab
Vestibular Rehabilitation is recommended for patients who have complaints of increased dizziness, decreased balance, or perceptual deficits. The therapist works with patients to identify the impairments causing their symptoms.
Women’s Health Urinary Incontinence Treatment Options
Nineteen million adults experience some form of incontinence. Incontinence is a lack of urinary control or a frequent need to urinate. Symptoms can be treated, but less than 50 percent of people with this problem consult a health care provider. Treatment may be as simple as learning to do exercises with proper technique and education about normal bladder function. Treatment benefits may include stronger muscles, less urinary leakage, and fewer trips to the bathroom.

What to Expect during Outpatient Therapy
Following an initial evaluation, the process of therapy involves:
- The therapist establishes a plan of care
- The patient attends therapy based on their specific needs
- Land based and/or
- Water Based
- A re-evaluation is performed on a monthly basis
- Discharge occurs when
- A patient’s goals are fully met
- A patient’s goals are partially met and will continue to improve with their home exercise program
- Progress is no longer occurring
- Therapy is not helping with the patient’s limitations
